Inter Milan will extend the contract of defender Stefan de Vrij.

This according to today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews. They report that the Dutchman’s recent run of starts was decisive in convincing the Nerazzurri.

At the moment, de Vrij is under contract with Inter until the end of June.

The 32-year-old former Lazio and Feyenoord defender is on the same contract he signed in 2023. He decided to sign a two-year deal that summer rather than leave on a free transfer.

Inter do, however, have the option of extending de Vrij’s contract by a further season.

It was hardly taken for granted that Inter would keep de Vrij around past the end of the season.

However, the Dutchman has really proven his worth in recent months.

De Vrij has been a key part of the Inter starting eleven for much of the autumn and winter. Francesco Acerbi has largely been unavailable due to injury.

And de Vrij has shown that his form has hardly declined. If anything, he has been at something like his best.

Therefore, Inter back de Vrij to continue to play a role for at least one more season.

Inter could very well just extend de Vrij’s contract until the end of June 2026 with the option they have.

However, the Gazzetta report, that’s not the Nerazzurri’s intention.

Rather, Inter will sit down with de Vrij’s agent in the coming weeks. They could offer a new deal that includes an option until the end of June 2027.
