The reigning Premier League champions travel to Portman Road on Sunday afternoon as they attempt to return to winning ways and complete a double against Ipswich.
In midweek, Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City squad travelled to the Gtech Community Stadium where they looked to take all three points from an ever-difficult Brentford side led by Thomas Frank.
Being difficult is just what the Bees would prove as they eliminated a lead built from a second-half Phil Foden brace in a matter of minutes, as Yoane Wissa scored in the 82nd minute, and Christian Norgaard tied the match deep into extra time.
With yet another set of lost points, Pep Guardiola’s side have now slumped down to eighth place in the table coming into this weekend’s match-up, sitting right below Aston Villa and AFC Bournemouth, but could move to as high as fifth with a win.
Their opponents on Sunday afternoon come into the match off the back of a tough 0-2 loss to Brighton earlier on in the week, after Kaoru Mitoma and Georginio Rutter sent Kieran McKenna’s men packing.
Despite sitting in the relegation zone, the Tractor Boys have been one of the surprising stories in the Premier League this season, with former Manchester City striker Liam Delap putting up big numbers for a youngster at his new club, scoring eight goals so far this season.
Ahead of kick-off, this is everything you need to know!
Ipswich Town and Manchester City will face each other on Sunday 19 January with kick-off at Portman Road scheduled for 16:30 in the UK.
Kalvin Phillips, who is out on loan at Portman Road from Manchester City, will be unavailable for Sunday’s match due to a clause in his loan which bars him from playing against his parent club.
Conor Chaplin will be sidelined for Sunday’s match after the team announced in early January that he was set to miss a couple of weeks due to a knock in his knee. Other absentees are expected to include Chiedozie Ogbene, Axel Tuanzebe, and Sammie Szmodics.
As for Manchester City, the Premier League champions are once again close to full strength, with only Oscar Bobb and Rodri expected to be ruled out entirely due to a lack of fitness, in the case of the former who is back in training.
Vitor Reis and Abdukodir Khusanov are expected to play no part despite officially signing for the club this week, albeit without a formal announcement from Manchester City, with the latter known to have trained on Saturday.
The first meeting of the season between the two sides came back in August 2024, which went the way of the reigning Premier League champions and was the first time the two sides had met since 2001.
All results put together over the two decades since, and Manchester City have certainly reigned supreme over the Tractor Boys, recording victories in three of their last five outings against the club.
Ipswich have lost just one of their last 28 home league games against Manchester City (W20 D7), winning the last four in a row. This is the first such meeting, however, since a 2-1 win in May 2001.
In what is the 30th different league campaign in which they have met, Manchester City are looking to complete the double over Ipswich for just the third time, previously doing so in 1961-62 and 1994-95.
Since a 3-2 win over Manchester United in September 1994, Ipswich Town are winless in their last six Premier League games against the reigning champions (D1 L5). They’ve conceded 21 goals in this run while scoring just twice themselves.
Manchester City have won 20 of their last 21 Premier League games against promoted sides since losing 2-1 to Leeds United in April 2021, with the only exception in this run being a 1-1 draw at Nottingham Forest in February 2023.
Over their last two Premier League campaigns (2001-02 and this one), Ipswich have won just one of their 14 games played on a Sunday (D6 L7), winning 2-1 at Spurs earlier this season.
