It’s not the end of the world that Manchester City won’t sign Florian Wirtz

It is now been decided that Florian Wirtz will not be a Manchester City player for next season and beyond. Sami Mokbel reported for the BBC yesterday that City deemed a move for the German international to be too expensive. Sacha Tavolieri followed that news by reporting on X that Wirtz has decided that he wants to move to Bayern Munich this summer. Wherever the truth lies, it probably lies in between the two stories, it isn’t the end of the world that Manchester City won’t sign Florian Wirtz. That fact did appear lost in the reaction to the news that broke yesterday.

Manchester City will have their summer transfer plans, and it isn’t Wirtz or bust.

What is clear is that Manchester City have the plans in place for the summer transfer window. They wouldn’t have put all of their eggs in the Florian Wirtz basket. City have never been a club that operates that way. They don’t operate that way, and never have. Besides last summer, City’s planning for the future has generally been well executed. But looking ahead to the summer transfer window, Manchester City will have their targets drawn up outside of Florian Wirtz. It’s too reactionary to believe that they won’t.

Perhaps Xavi Simons is a player that City targets instead of Wirtz. Perhaps it’s a player like Morgan Gibbs-White. Or maybe it’s someone that hasn’t been revealed just yet. Who knows. But judging a transfer window before it’s happened is a strange way to view things. It isn’t the end of the world that City lost out in the battle to sign Florian Wirtz. Looking at Sami Mokbel’s report, the costs to sign Wirtz can be spread out over several players. That may prove to be the smarter business for Manchester City to complete based on the size of the rebuild City will embark upon this summer.

The reaction to City losing out on Wirtz was interesting to watch unfold.

But what was interesting to watch unfold was the reaction to the news that Manchester City won’t sign Florian Wirtz. CityXtra relayed the report from Sami Mokbel on X yesterday. The replies to their tweet are an interesting read. But the sky isn’t falling, nor is it the end of the world, that City won’t sign Florian Wirtz. The summer transfer window is yet to open, so the full view of what City have planned this summer hasn’t come into view.

For some, Florian Wirtz was the only player Manchester City should sign to replace Kevin De Bruyne. That’s a fair view, and some people won’t change that opinion. But Manchester City’s summer transfer window can’t be judged on that decision alone. Perhaps that is the perspective that yesterday’s news needs to be viewed from. Especially considering the summer transfer window is yet to open which can be lost at times.
