LAFC have transferred leftback Omar Campos to Liga MX side Cruz Azul for a reported fee “north of $4m” (Bogert). Campos was acquired by LAFC last offseason and signed to a U22 Initiative deal. It is being rumored that Campos wanted to return to Mexico for family/personal reasons.
Campos now heads to the Mexican giants after one season in Southern California. The 22 year old defender won a U.S. Open Cup title with LAFC last season while playing roughly 2,300 minutes across all competitions. Campos’s departure does leave a hole for LAFC as even though they still have Ryan Hollingshead, losing a starting quality fullback removes the versatility of Hollingshead who looks to be slotted in as the club’s number one leftback for 2025.
LAFC continues to lose a ton of talent that was there in 2024. Omar Campos, Eduard Atuesta, Jesus Murrillo, Ilie Sanchez, Kei Kamara, and more are all gone from the 2024 U.S. Open Cup champions. The team has re-signed some key pieces from last year’s roster and even added some top free agents, but they are going to need more in order to be back at the top of MLS where this club always states that they want to be.
