Jermaine Pennant has raised concern to Stoke City about Tom Cannon, who could be recalled by parent club Leicester City in January according to recent claims in the media.

As per a recent claim from The Sun's Alan Nixon, via his exclusive Patreon service, Leicester are considering exercising their recall option to take Cannon away from the Bet 365 Stadium.

The report states that the Foxes are hoping to negotiate a loan deal with an option-to-buy, with the intention of receiving £10 million for the young striker. Cannon, 21, joined Leicester in a permanent deal from Everton last summer for a reported £7.5 million fee, but he has largely been surplus to requirements in the East Midlands.

It is believed that Leicester have the option to call Cannon back to the King Power Stadium in January, and they intend on initiating a bidding war for his services.

As per reports, Stoke do not currently have an option to purchase Cannon but Leicester are looking to insert that clause in another loan deal come the turn of the year, with promotion hopefuls Sheffield United and West Bromwich Albion both touted as potential destinations.

This could potentially force the Potters to follow suit and readjust the terms of the loan deal, although they will doubtless be sweating over the future of Cannon.

Tom Cannon's start to life at Stoke City

Stoke pulled off something of a coup by beating numerous Championship rivals to Cannon's services on the final day of the summer transfer window.

Many clubs had expressed a keen interest including current league leaders Sunderland, who are believed to have lodged an unsuccessful bid for the former Preston North End loan star.

The frontman endured a moderate goal drought in his first month in the Potteries, failing to find the back of the net in any of his opening four affairs.

However, he announced himself in style with a stunning four-goal haul in Stoke's 6-1 rout of Championship newcomers Portsmouth on October 2, representing the club's biggest victory since their famous win by the same margin against Liverpool all the way back in 2015.

Cannon was unable to add to his account in Stoke's 0-0 stalemate draw at Swansea City before the international break, although his importance has been underlined to a great extent nonetheless.

New boss Narcis Pelach will want to see increased consistency in the coming weeks and months from Cannon, though, who has earned his stripes and proved himself to be a reliable source of goals at Championship level.

However, that could well paradoxically end up being something of a double-edged sword for Stoke, as heightened goalscoring form by the 21-year-old may increase the odds of a recall and, in turn, the gravity of interest elsewhere.

Jermaine Pennant's Stoke City, Tom Cannon verdict amid potential Leicester City recall

Former Stoke winger Pennant, who is still fondly remembered in the Potteries for his three-year stay between 2011 and 2014 and, of course, his role in their memorable run to the FA Cup final in his first season, believes that his ex-side would be the victims of a significant blow if Leicester decide on recalling Cannon.

"If you get a player who's bagged four goals - which is not easily done, you've got to look at the likes of [Erling] Haaland - losing a player who can score you goals, it doesn't matter what team or how good you are, it's going to be a massive blow," Pennant exclusively told Football League World.

"Like I said, Stoke are struggling at the moment and they're going to need players like Cannon to be staying there and putting the ball in the back of the net.

"So I think they'll be doing everything they can, and the power is out of their hands. It lies with Leicester.
