Late penalty sees us drop points in Altach

We offered too little this afternoon against SCR Altach, especially in attack. After taking two wins against the top two in the table, we had to contend ourselves with a point at the side bottom of the table in the penultimate match of the regular season.
The secrets to our 3-1 success against Sturm were deployed again as Thomas Letsch opted for a very attacking line-up. Not just with Adam Daghim and Karim Onisiwo, who led the line, as the threatening trio of Gloukh, Vertessen and Nene were deployed just behind them!
It only took around 10 minutes for the approach to pay off – even if that came a little out of nowhere. Altach had worked their way into the encounter only for a long ball from our boys to test them. Daghim sprinted to block a long ball upfield from Stojanovic, and Yorbe Vertessen was able to direct the ball into an empty net (11'). The goal took the wind out of the sails of Kameri & Co as Onisiwo tried to double the lead (13'). The game then quietened down with our side in charge, but unable to create many big chances. Altach midfielder Kaiba sent in a warning shot by curling the ball just wide, before Joane Gadou had a chance to head in a second (26'). Those were the best moments of the first period.
We stepped up a gear at the start of the second half as Altach dropped back and did everything to contain us. There were few highlights to entertain the 4,865 fans at the Cashpoint Arena in the second period either, until a sudden penalty award in the final phase threw everything up into the air.
Aleksa Terzic brought an opponent down when leaping for the ball on the edge of the area – and a penalty kick resulted! Alex Schlager saved the spot-kick, but had no chance of reaching an effort from Dietz on the rebound (80'), as we were all-square once more. We lacked the incisiveness up front today and only in stoppage time did we begin to create with ease. Substitute Edmund Baidoo had a shot inside the six-yard box after the ball was played in but was denied by the goalkeeper (90+3'), while Onisiwo was also unable to beat Stojanovic with a header (90+4'). Altach threw everything they had at it, with Ingolitsch seeing a second yellow card, and the game finished level.
We have one more match in the ADMIRAL Bundesliga's regular season - in Salzburg next Sunday (16 March) at 17:00 CET. Tickets for our clash against WAC are available at our Online Ticket Shop.
Anything can happen when you are only 1-0 in front, and we knew about how strong Altach are from set pieces. It would have been better if we had made it 2-0, but we can't start to doubt ourselves now. We had plenty of opportunities - now we need to learn our lessons, stick at it and remain positive!
Alex Schlager
Diambou for Nene (65'), Yeo for Daghim (65'), E. Baidoo for Capaldo (81')
Schlager (78' dissent), Bidstrup (90+2' unsporting behaviour)
