Leeds United and Burnley are interested in signing Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy
Leeds United and Burnley are reportedly exploring the possibility of signing Jamie Vardy, who recently announced his departure from Leicester City following their relegation from the Premier League.
According to a report from TEAMtalk, there’s growing belief that he could land one last Premier League move. Leeds and Burnley are among the front-runners, both keen to inject proven top-flight experience into their forward lines.
The 38-year-old, who helped fire Leicester to their historic Premier League title and FA Cup triumph, is determined to continue playing at the top level. And both newly-promoted clubs see him as a short-term game-changer who can still deliver goals at the highest level.
While Vardy has admirers in the Championship, including from rising force Wrexham, a drop down the pyramid looks increasingly unlikely. The Welsh side appears to have accepted as much and are now turning their attention to Leeds striker Patrick Bamford.
A potential exit for Bamford could open the door for Vardy to arrive at Elland Road, although Burnley reportedly remain firmly in the mix. With both clubs seemingly looking to strengthen their attacking options this summer, landing a player of Vardy’s calibre would signal strong intent ahead of the new season.
Bamford’s current season in the Championship has not been for great viewing. 17 appearances, albeit all off the bench, yet he has failed to register any goal contributions at all. It is evident to see why a move away at this stage of his career would be beneficial.
Minimal game time in the Championship will mean he won't get a look-in next season, and if Leeds want to avoid lingering near the bottom they'll want to upgrade.
Vardy’s elite-level experience and big-game mentality are seen as major assets despite his age. He’s also a proven leader and dressing room influence, qualities both Leeds and Burnley are seeking as they rebuild for top-flight football.
Burnley managed to do so at the first time of asking. After being relegated last season, finishing 19th, they have bounced straight back up, and might look at Vardy as someone to keep the mentality from this season in a good place.
