Celtic goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel endured a frustrating night while on international duty as Denmark lost 2-1 against Spain.

The veteran goalkeeper has been sensational for Celtic this season, keeping nine clean sheets in 11 games.

The 38-year-old was criticised in Denmark’s previous defeat against Spain last month, and he hasn’t received any sympathy from the Danish press after the latest defeat.

Danish newspaper BT gave him a three-star rating, which means average, although they noted that he was ‘left in the lurch” by his teammates.

The Bhoys goalkeeper made five saves during the game, including two saves inside the box.

He also made one error that led to a goal.

What was really frustrating to watch was Schmeichel’s poor distribution. He managed only 68 percent passing accuracy and should have done better with long balls.

The Danish goalkeeper said: “We were a fingertip away from getting something. It was a fantastic save at the end by their goalkeeper.”

Schmeichel could continue at Celtic next season

Eyebrows were raised when Brendan Rodgers signed the former Leicester City goalkeeper to replace Joe Hart in the summer.

Many people expected that Celtic would sign a young goalkeeper, but Rodgers had other ideas.

Schmeichel has played a huge role as Celtic have made a flying start to the season.

The goalkeeper signed a one-year deal with the Hoops in the summer but has the option of extending the deal by another year.

He recently said he doesn’t want to overthink about his contractual situation.
