Lens are nearing an agreement to sign Australia international goalkeeper Mathew Ryan (32), according to a report from L’Equipe. Will Still’s Artois side were in the market for a goalkeeper after Brice Samba’s shock €14m mid-season transfer to Ligue 1 rivals Stade Rennais. Lens thought they had found his replacement with Marseille loanee Pau Lopez. But Girona FC wanted to retain the Spaniard until the final Champions League game at the end of January, which prompted Lens to walk out of the deal despite having announced Lopez’s arrival.

Lens seem to have found their goalkeeper as L’Equipe understands that Ryan is keen to join a team for which he would be the starting goalkeeper. The experienced Australian keeper currently plays for AS Roma. He is Mile Svilar’s understudy between the sticks. Ryan only featured once this season in the Coppa d’Italia. He is out of contract next June. Both Lens and Roma are in talks and an agreement is reportedly close to being reached.
