Liverpool fell to a 1-0 defeat at Tottenham Hotspur in their Carabao Cup semi-final first-leg encounter last night.
The Reds headed to London full of confidence, having not lost a single game in all competitions since the 1-0 reverse to Nottingham Forest in September.
However, Liverpool’s impressive run came to an end against Spurs after Lucas Bergvall’s late winner.
The 18-year-old’s goal wasn’t without controversy, as the visitors strongly believed he shouldn’t have been on the pitch to make the decisive contribution.
Bergvall was on a yellow card when he fouled Kostas Tsimikas in an incident that went unnoticed by referee Stuart Attwell.
Despite this, Liverpool were not at their best and will need to produce a better display when they welcome Tottenham to Anfield next month.
Manager Arne Slot selected a strong team against Tottenham.
He handed a big opportunity to Diogo Jota, who has mostly been limited to substitute appearances in recent months.
Jota could have used the fixture as a springboard to secure a regular return to the starting XI, but he failed to impress.
His only involvement was a blocked shot on the stroke of half-time, and he was taken off after an hour.
The 28-year-old had just 30 touches and lost possession on 11 occasions.
Jota committed two fouls and was dribbled past once. He contributed a key pass and two tackles.
