Liverpool urged to sign Man City star as shock replacement for Virgil van Dijk

Van Dijk’s current contract at Anfield expires at the end of the season
Liverpool have been told to consider Manuel Akanji as a surprise replacement for Virgil van Dijk if the Dutchman leaves this summer.
Van Dijk will be out of contract at the end of the season as it stands, with no agreement yet reached between the club and the 33-year-old over a new deal.
The Liverpool captain has been relaxed when discussing the situation this season, but last month dismissed social media reports that an agreement was imminent.
Should Van Dijk leave Anfield in the summer, it would leave the club with a huge task to try and fill that void, but former Liverpool defender Stephane Henchoz has suggested that City centre-back Akanji could be the man to target.
Henchoz, who earned 72 caps for Switzerland, was asked if he could see any of his fellow countrymen following in his footsteps and making the move to Anfield.
“There are only two current players from Switzerland I could see at Liverpool, given that they are one of the best clubs in the world,” Henchoz told BoyleSports. “Granit Xhaka, who we know from Arsenal and is now at Bayer Leverkusen.
“The other, who I could see replacing Virgil van Dijk, is Manuel Akanji at Manchester City. He is a good player who has shown how high his level is. I could see Akanji at Liverpool. He is quick, he is strong, he is young enough to still improve and he is an intelligent player.
“He has great anticipation, he is comfortable with the ball and is the kind of player I could see playing for Liverpool.”
Van Dijk has once again been one of Liverpool’s most consistent performers this season, playing every minute in all 28 Premier League matches.
The Reds are firm favourites to win the Premier League and are among the strongest contenders for the Champions League, but Henchoz believes Van Dijk’s decision over his future will come down to money.
“I’m certain that Arne Slot is desperate to keep Virgil van Dijk, but I don’t think he has the power to offer the money and length of contract that Van Dijk is looking for,” Henchoz said.
“It all comes down to the finances of the club, but if Liverpool are to lose Van Dijk then it would be a massive, massive loss.
“He is so important on the pitch as a player but also with his leadership and his personality, when people aren’t doing their jobs he is letting them know.”
