Sunderland have reportedly won the race to sign Danns on loan from Liverpool, the Black Cats seeing off competition from Blackburn and Hull City for the 19-year-old forward, according to James Pearce.

Danns, who scored his third senior Liverpool goal against Accrington Stanley in the FA Cup last month, will join a Sunderland side pushing for promotion to the Premier League, hoping to compete alongside the likes of Liverpool next season.

The Reds’ academy graduate announced himself following his appearance in ‘Klopp’s kids’ 2024 Carabao Cup final win against Chelsea. Days later, Danns netted twice in front of the Kop in an FA Cup quarter-final against Southampton.

With the attacking options available to Arne Slot, this feels like a smart deal for both the club and the player. Danns should benefit from consistent game time – something hard to come by at Anfield, especially with Diogo Jota’s return only bolstering the Dutchman’s side.

Liverpool fans should be encouraged by the move, given the success of Ben Doak’s loan to Middlesbrough, as well as Lewis Koumas’ spell at Stoke City. Doak, in particular, has been one of the Championship’s standout players this season.

Danns will be playing alongside Bellingham – which, in another world, may have been at Liverpool. But it’s Jude’s younger brother Jobe who will link up with the teenage prodigy at the Stadium of Light.

His last appearance came in Liverpool’s UCL away game against PSV, in front of an audience of 35,000. The England striker should get used to this, with Sunderland’s home attendance averaging more than 38,000 a game.

Danns has scored twice in seven appearances so far this season across youth and senior football, including one in the 4-0 victory over Accrington Stanley at Anfield in the FA Cup Third Round.

After injury scuppered a potential loan move to Plymouth Argyle last summer, it will be exciting to see how Danns – who was described as being ‘desperate to be the best he can be’ by Barry Lewtas –  builds on his promising career to date, as part of a youthful Sunderland team full of quality.
