Forward Luis Muriel is out for goals and assists this season. As one of the Designated Players on the Orlando City SC squad, supporters have puzzled in the past why he doesn’t set off smoke during matches more often.

Muriel knows what the Lions need to do to win this season. He’ll do anything to see this happen. But that is going to include joining the ranks of frequent scorers.

He demonstrated this in Orlando’s match against New York City FC. While his effort was unsuccessful, he combined with Marco Pasalic in the 69th minute for the Lions’ only score. This equalized the score but for only two minutes.

The final score was 2-1 for New York City.

He’s shown bursts of brilliance in previous seasons. But he’s never sounded more plugged in what Orlando is doing.

Muriel said the Lions players are on the same page during the attacking phase of their game. But they haven’t found themselves defensively through the initial 2025 matches. In drills, the plan is to defend up front and lead from that foot. He emphasized that defense isn’t the responsibility of one set of players.

All have to be as tuned to defense as they are offense.

In his best games, Muriel has gotten off numerous key passes. But he also wins vital aerial duels. But even in some of his finest matches in the past, he’s covered nearly every statistic but a goal.

Early in the 2025 season Orlando City players and coaches are finding themselves. They are solely responsible for the club’s success. Muriel has proved he can execute in the statistical areas that win games for the Lions.
