Manchester United defender Luke Shaw has shared a brutally honest assessment of the club’s disappointing season.
The 1-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League final ended their hopes of silverware last night.
Shaw openly discussed the need for major changes in the club’s structure and direction after the match.
He gave his full support to manager Ruben Amorim, expressing belief in his ability to turn things around.
“A lot has to change, it’s clear to see,” Shaw said. “That’s why I say Ruben is 100 percent the right person.
“He knows what is to be done at this club, I believe he will do everything to make that change and put United back at the top.”
Shaw apologises to United fans
The 29-year-old expressed his gratitude to the fans and apologised for the team’s poor performances this season.
“The fans are going to be annoyed,” Shaw added. “And rightly so. But all I can say is thank you so much for the support.”
Shaw pointed out that the team must now focus on positives and find the strength to bounce back from their current low point.
“We have to look at the positives, and the only positive is we can only go up from here,” he said.
“We’re at rock bottom now, we have to find a way to drive ourselves back and get back to where this club deserves to be.”
United play their final match of the season against Aston Villa at Old Trafford on Sunday.
That fixture will mark their last chance to give something back to the fans who have stood by them throughout.
United plan to strengthen their squad by bringing in several quality players this summer.
These include Matheus Cunha from Wolverhampton Wanderers, who would be a useful acquisition if they can conclude a deal.
However, their defeat against Tottenham could scupper moves for other players.
