Lyon have officially qualified for the Europa League on the back of PSG’s Coupe de France win. Les Parisiens swatted Reims aside in a one-way traffic final this Saturday (3-0) to complete a second consecutive domestic treble. In doing so, the Champions League finalists have done Lyon a huge favour. Les Gones would have had to contend with a Conference League playoffs round spot had Reims defied the odds. Because PSG prevented them from doing so, the Europa League spot that goes to the Coupe de France winners now goes to Ligue 1’s sixth-placed finishers, Lyon. Paulo Fonseca’s side will accompany Lille in the 2025-2026 Europa League.
Reims’ loss is also Strasbourg’s gain. With Lyon going into the Europa League, their Conference League playoffs round spot now goes to the team that finished below in Ligue 1, seventh-placed Strasbourg. Liam Rosenior’s Alsatians need to prevail in a two-legged playoff to qualify for Europe’s third-tier tournament. France had no Ligue 1 team in the Conference League this season following Lens’ defeat in the playoffs against Panathinaikos.
