Manchester United are aiming to reinforce their squad before the transfer deadline in early February.

A left-wing-back is the top priority for manager Ruben Amorim, but United could also land an attacking player before the deadline.

Sunday World (page 64) claims the club have already held initial talks with Chelsea playmaker Christopher Nkunku’s representatives.

The Blues’ £70 million price tag is a major stumbling block, but a transfer could materialise if Alejandro Garnacho moves to Stamford Bridge.

The Premier League giants are reportedly eyeing a ‘sensational’ swap deal during the final days of the winter transfer window.

United should avoid landing Nkunku in Garnacho swap

Garnacho has been inconsistent for the Red Devils this season, but he has still bagged eight goals and five assists in 33 appearances.

The Argentine is a left winger by trade. He has had to adapt to an attacking midfield role under Amorim and has been in relatively good form.

Garnacho got into several good scoring positions against Rangers in the Europa League in midweek, and he was unlucky not to score.

Nkunku has fared equally well for the Blues with 17 goal involvements, but most of his playing time has come in the cup and European games.

He has barely made an impact in the top flight. His only notable contribution came in the 1-0 win over Bournemouth at the start of the season.

Nkunku, described as ‘world-class‘ by Bundesliga.com, had an injury-plagued 2023/24 season with the Blues.

His reduced workload this campaign has meant that he has stayed unscathed. However, his injury problems could arise again with regular playing time.

Nkunku is almost seven years older than Garnacho, who has a much higher ceiling. A swap deal before the transfer deadline makes no sense.
