Manchester United are reportedly hellbent on resigning Angel Gomes who managed to prove his worth following his transfer to Ligue 1.

The attacking midfielder is a London native of Portuguese origins. He rose through the ranks of the Red Devils and eventually joined their first team in 2019. But due to the lack of playing time, he was released in the summer of 2020 and was subsequently snapped up by Lille on a free transfer.

This proved to be quite a coup on the French club’s part. Following a loan stint at Boavista, Gomes earned his opportunity at Stade Pierre-Mauroy, becoming a pillar at the Ligue 1 side. This season, he has thus far contributed with two goals and as many assists in 19 appearances, but his momentum has been derailed by injuries.

However, this is widely expected to be the 24-year-old’s final season at Lille, as his contract will expire in June and he apparently has no intention of discussing a renewal. Therefore, his situation has alarmed several clubs, and chief amongst them are the Red Devils.

According to The Daily Briefing, Man United boss Ruben Amorim is ‘keen’ on the club to sign the midfielder on a free transfer, considering him the right profile for his tactical project.

However, the Red Devils aren’t alone in the race. As the source explains, Tottenham, Aston Villa, Newcastle and West Ham United are also keen admirers of the England international. Hence, it remains to be seen if Gomes would fancy a second spell at Old Trafford where he still has some unfinished business, or opt for a new experience elsewhere

In the meantime, the Lille star is slowly carving his place in the English national team. After impressing on his debut back in September, Ian Wright insisted Gomes will give a selection headache to then-interim coach Lee Carsley, and we can expect the same with Thomas Tuchel in charge.
