The out-of-favour full-back returns to the Eredivisie almost three years on from his Feyenoord exit, which saw him become Erik ten Hag’s first-ever signing as Manchester United manager.

In his first season at Old Trafford, Malacia mostly played second fiddle to Luke Shaw. He made 14 Premier League starts, as well as eight in the Europa League, three in the FA Cup and four in the League Cup, which the Reds eventually went on to win.

Then, on the final day of the 2022/2023 league campaign, he sustained a knee injury that ruled him out of the entirety of his sophomore term.

Patrick Dorgu’s arrival paved the way for Malacia’s exit

Malacia endured 17 tumultuous months of surgery, setbacks and rehabilitation to eventually make his long-awaited return last November. He has, however, struggled to reclaim a place in the starting XI – even whilst Ruben Amorim has had no senior left-backs fit and available.

Now that United have forked out £25 million to sign Patrick Dorgu from Lecce, Malacia would’ve fallen even further in the pecking order had he stayed in Manchester throughout the transfer window.

Alas, Romano gave the defender’s move to PSV the ‘here we go’ treatment this evening following reports a deal had fallen through at the 11th hour. His £75,000-a-week wages will be covered by the Dutch outfit, and they have the option of making his switch permanent upon the culmination of 2024/2025.

Should that be the case, he’d be pulling the curtains on his Red Devils career after only 47 appearances. United also retain a 30 per cent sell-on clause in case Malacia, 25, opts to ply his trade elsewhere in the future.
