Pep Guardiola could be set to lose yet another assistant manager as Carlos Vicens finds himself at the centre of interest from Portugal, according to reports.
Vicens has become the latest in a long line of coaches to have attracted interest regarding senior positions at clubs in European football, largely as a direct result of working under Manchester City’s long-standing head coach for so long.
Among the names to have moved on to senior roles in management throughout the game after working alongside Guardiola are Enzo Maresca at Chelsea, Mikel Arteta of Arsenal, and Domenec Torrent – most recently of Atlético San Luis.
And it is not just assistant coaches that are going on to make names for themselves after working alongside City’s legendary manager, but also former players at the Etihad Stadium, with Vincent Kompany now a Bundesliga champion with Bayern Munich.
Now, it is one of Portugal’s most prominent clubs who are turning to the Etihad Stadium for a potential new boss after recently dismissing of their latest manager in search of more success and a new direction.
That is according to the information of Maisfutebol, who reveal that SC Braga are in the market for a replacement for departed head coach Carlos Carvalhal, and are currently in the process of ‘evaluating in detail’ Pep Guardiola’s assistant at Manchester City, Carlos Vicens.
It is explained that the 42-year-old coach fits the profile that the Portuguese side have defined behind the scenes being ‘young, promising, a winner and with experience in training players’.
Such is the interest in Manchester City’s assistant coach that despite having other options among their list of candidates, Braga have reportedly already interviewed the tactician, who is now one of the favourites to be formally offered the job.
There would be high expectations on Vicens should he prove successful in the chase for the leading role at Braga, with the club coming into the 2025/26 campaign off the back of a fourth-placed finish in Portugal’s top-flight.
There was however a significant margin between Braga and the eventual champions, Sporting CP – with the top-flight title winners concluding the campaign on 82 points, and SC Braga taking 66 points across the season.
Having been promoted into Manchester City’s senior set-up from the Under-18s, Carlos Vicens has previously attracted senior managerial interest in the past from Heracles Almelo, when a contract agreement between the pair was dissolved in June 2022.
