Manchester United duo Harry Maguire and Marcus Rashford have been left out of Lee Carsley’s England squad for the upcoming UEFA Nations League matches against Greece and Finland.
News broke this afternoon that Maguire would be left out after the emergence of Lisandro Martinez and Matthijs de Ligt as Erik ten Hag’s preferred centre-back pairing.
The decision to leave out Rashford comes with greater surprise, even though he hasn’t been included in an England squad since March.
Maguire, however, has been a regular for England since 2017 but has paid the price for a lack of game-time at United. That was to be expected and it’s a sign of a new chapter since he was one of Gareth Southgate’s most trusted lieutenants.
The defender has played just 16 minutes of Premier League action since the September international break.
Kobbie Mainoo is the only United player to make the latest England squad.
