This has been coming for the Aston Villa Women. Although they haven't seen the desired results, the play from Natalia Arroyo's side has often been deserving of at least a point. As is often the case in this sport, though, fairness is not usually a thing.
Instead, for a team that has been facing the pressures of the drop zone, going above and beyond would be needed. While a lot of good build-up and chances have often left something of a positive feeling among those on the roster, getting a draw, much less a victory, was going to take an extra bit of special effort.
This is exactly what AFWFC saw from Kirsty Hanson on Sunday. Subbed on around the 65th minute, she superbly received a long pass off her run and dribbled past the keeper. From an incredibly tight angle, she then found the back of the net and put the sides level.
Something like this was a fitting way for the Villa score to happen. After conceding the penalty earlier and now at one apiece, Arroyo wasn't satisfied with just holding on for the point. As had often been the case down the right-hand side, the attack found ways to put the Liverpool defenders under pressure.
Ebony Salmon found her way deep in the final third, and her well-placed cross then turned into an LFC own goal. Regardless of who scored or how it went in, the pressure from Villa and consistent momentum throughout the game led to the visitors finding a way to earn three points away from home.
Now four points clear of Crystal Palace, the Aston Villa Women can breathe something of a sigh of relief. More importantly, however, they saw what they were capable of and did so while overcoming what can often be a completely deflating event.
Arroyo believes she is building the correct way and instilling the right beliefs in her squad, and she will be eager to continue to prove that this team can achieve great things. Sunday's win against Liverpool could prove to be something of a catalyst for AVWFC.
