Milan and Theo Hernandez Still Distant on Extension

Milan will dive back into a few contract negotiations after the January window, and the one with Theo Hernandez remains the most challenging, as has been the case for a few months. Instead, the Rossoneri are very confident about Tijjani Reijnders and Mike Maignan re-upping, La Gazzetta dello Sport informs.

The Dutch midfielder already has a long-term deal, but the team aims to reward his growth and remove any doubt about his future. He could tack on two more years, until 2030, receiving a pay raise from €1.7M to €3.5M net, plus add-ons. Shaking hands with the goalie is more urgent given the 2026 expiration date. However, the front office believes that most of the work has been done already. There’s an agreement in principle until 2029, with his salary going from €3.2M to €5M.

Instead, Theo Hernandez and the Milan hierarchy have been in a stalemate for a few months without tangible progress. The Frenchman asked to reach the same level as Rafael Leao and be the highest-paid player in the squad, at least jointly.

The Rossoneri weren’t keen on doing that beforehand, even more so in the midst of a pedestrian and blunder-filled campaign for the fullback. He’s expected to make his decision about staying or leaving only in the summer.

Our Take on Milan and Theo Hernandez

He could have gotten what he asks for in his heyday, but he’ll have to dig out of a hole and perform well for consecutive months now. It might not still be enough. The management could always decide to sacrifice somebody to safeguard the financial balance after a few additions and renewals.
