Milan president Paolo Scaroni admitted building a new stadium next to the existing San Siro is a scenario the two clubs now can ‘take into account’ after positive talks with Milan mayor Beppe Sala and representatives from the Italian government.

Scaroni met with Inter, Sala and the Minister of Culture Alessandro Giuli, on Tuesday to discuss a viable plan for the construction of a new arena in Milan, and the Rossoneri president revealed they ‘overcame the problem’ regarding San Siro’s second tier.

That specific part of the stadium is subject to a protective restriction due to cultural interest, which prevents anyone from demolishing it, but Scaroni explained how all the parts involved are trying to work out a plan to ‘preserve’ the second tier while also erecting a new stadium.

Scaroni: San Siro meeting went ‘very well’

“The meeting went very well, we had the Milan Mayor, the Minister of Culture and the Minister of Sport,” Scaroni told reporters ahead of Milan’s Champions League clash against Club Brugge, as quoted by Milannews.

“It was a high-level meeting in which we overcame the problem posed for months by the conservation of San Siro’s second tier.

“We can build a new stadium here, in the San Siro neighbourhood, preserving the second tier in the new building, which will come to life here, to replace the stadium where we are today.

“A very positive meeting which took us closer to considering the construction of a new stadium in San Siro as a scenario to take into account.”

The timing of the construction work is still unknown, which is why Scaroni can’t rule out other options, such as building Milan’s new stadium in San Donato.

“We still have some steps, such as understanding the value of the stadium and the surrounding area. We still don’t know it, and this is why we keep our option [to build a stadium] in San Donato valid, as we worked for a long time and already spent €40m.”

Scaroni recently pointed out that the plan to build a new stadium next to San Siro was the one he originally proposed six years ago, when he had defined the current arena as ‘an old artefact’.
