Real Madrid secured a 2-0 win over Real Sociedad in the final La Liga game of the season at the Santiago Bernabeu earlier today.
The game also marked manager Carlo Ancelotti’s last one in charge of Los Blancos while also being the final one that Luka Modric played for Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Naturally, it was an emotionally charged afternoon for the pair who were given a rousing farewell at the Bernabeu by the fans.
Modric started for Real Madrid in what will be his final home game at the Bernabeu before leaving once the FIFA Club World Cup is completed.
The midfield icon received a brilliant ovation from the fans when he was subbed off in the 86th minute while players from Real Madrid and Real Sociedad formed a guard of honour for the Croatian as he walked off the pitch.
After the game, the tribute event continued with the Bernabeu scoreboards displaying a touching tribute video for the departing captain. A giant jersey bearing his name and number was also displayed in the south end.

Following that, Modric addressed the fans at the Bernabeu as he said goodbye to the hallowed turf after 13 years at the club.
“The moment I never wanted to come has arrived. It’s been a long journey,” Modric started.
“I want to thank the club, President Florentino Perez, all the coaches, my teammates, and everyone who has helped me throughout this time. Thank you so much from the bottom of my heart.”
Continuing, he addressed his family and the fans, saying: “To my family, without you all this wouldn’t be possible. It’s hard… We’ve won a lot. We’ve had wonderful moments. But the greatest trophy I’ve won is your affection. Your love.”
Concluding, Modric, who also shared a warm moment with former teammate Toni Kroos after the match, stated:
“I have no words to thank you for everything you’ve given me. I want to say a phrase I’ve seen and really like: ‘Don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened.’ Hala Madrid y nada mas!”
