Motherwell fans call for Scottish Government action which would benefit Celtic fans | OneFootball

Motherwell fans have called for the alcohol ban in Scottish football to be overturned. There has been a ban of the sale of alcohol at Scottish football games since 1981 after disorder at the Scottish Cup Final in 1980.

The ‘Well host St Mirren at Fir Park this afternoon and has a message for the Scottish Government, using an iconic line from Still Game.

The message will hopefully be part of an ongoing campaign to see relaxed rules on drinking at football matches. There have been suggestions of categorising fixtures and allowing for alcohol to be sold at lower category games.

That notorious afternoon at Hampden saw chaos unfold, but blaming it entirely on alcohol is absurd. The real issue was a broader culture of disorder in British football at the time. It was also at the height of The Troubles with tensions across the divide spilling over. Yet, four decades later, Scottish football remains restricted by laws that no longer reflect the reality of the game or society.

At the same time, rugby fans at Murrayfield can enjoy a drink without any problems, exposing the clear hypocrisy in how different sports are treated. Celtic have shown across their European travels that they can handle a pint responsibly.

It’s time to stop treating football fans unfairly and modernise the game in Scotland.
