Newcastle 1 Brighton 2 (AET) – Match ratings and comments on all Newcastle United players

We asked Mark Jankowski to give us his match ratings and player comments after Newcastle 1 Brighton 2 (AET).
Dubravka – 6
Didn’t have much to do for most of the game.
Couldn’t do much for Brighton’s opener, made an excellent save at 1-1, but probably sold himself too early for the winner.
Today was an advert for the fact that Dubravka isn’t really any better than Pope with his feet.
Trippier – 6
Led by example for the majority of the time he was on the pitch.
He was unlucky not to block Minteh’s effort for the Brighton goal but looked weary when subbed off.
Need him to build up his match fitness ahead of our Wembley trip.
Schar – 5
He’d have been a couple of marks higher had he not just edged offside at the end of normal time.
Fabian looks like he needs a rest though, some very sloppy passes weren’t punished and he was too static at times, particularly on the first Brighton goal.
Burn – 5
I feel like I’m maybe being a bit harsh here.
Burn grafted well all game and made some important clearances but Joao Pedro won far too many headers against him.
His levels have slipped a little over the past few games.
Livramento – 7
Tino dealt with the threat of Minteh well in the first half and then Mitoma in the second.
His positive running helped earn us the penalty and his efforts could prove to be crucial moving forward, if Lewis Hall turns out to have picked up a serious injury.
Miley – 6
He looked as impressively mature as always in the first half.
Very calm on the ball and is improving in his work off the ball.
Removed fairly early on in the second half, he’d not quite hit the standards he’d shown in the first half by the time he went off.
Tonali – 6
Sandro looked much improved on his past couple of performances but he did give the ball away unnecessarily on occasion, trying a pass that wasn’t on.
The missed passes were probably a consequence of him trying to force the issue at times but against better opposition those mistakes could be costly.
Joelinton – 6
The timing of big Joe’s return is very encouraging with the League Cup final around the corner.
He looked strong and confident on the ball during his shift.
He was flagging a little before his withdrawal but an OK shift.
Barnes – 5
Another rating that may be a little on the harsh side but things just weren’t quite clicking in the final third and he doesn’t work as hard as Murphy or Gordon off the ball.
He’s now got a massive opportunity to put his name in Newcastle legend with Gordon’s suspension but he’ll need to up his levels from today’s performance.
Isak – 7
Clinically despatched his penalty and toyed with the Brighton defenders at times.
It was good to see Isak back on the pitch following his midweek absence.
He’s now surely our only hope to win the cup in a couple of weeks.
Gordon – 4
At the time of his sending off I felt that maybe he’d been a bit unlucky.
Having watched the incident back since, I don’t think he can have any excuses and has a lot to make up to his teammates.
I don’t think he’s intentionally trying to catch the lad in the head but it’s such an unnecessary reaction that invites the ref to make a decision.
Subs
Bruno – 7
Bruno showed class and importantly urgency that has been missing from his past couple of performances.
Any goal we may have scored was surely going to be provided by the Brazilian and if not for a shoulder, he’d have laid on the winner.
Willock – 6
Willock got into some incredible positions and gave the Brighton back line plenty of problems, unfortunately his final ball wasn’t up to scratch.
Murphy – 6
Tried to get balls into the strikers at every opportunity but he was careless in possession at times, while working hard in others.
Targett- 5
Hit the first man with every cross.
Does ok to a point but has to provide more going forward.
Wilson – 5
Couldn’t really get into the game and didn’t have a sniff at goal.
The best thing you can say is that he’s starting to look fit.
Hopefully the goals will soon follow.
