In a recent report, AS mentioned that Newcastle United are in the running to sign Espanyol keeper Joan Garcia. It has been claimed that the Magpies are facing competition in the form of Barcelona in the race to land the Spanish custodian this summer.
Garcia enjoyed a decent campaign at the Spanish club as he put in a run of solid performances for them in La Liga. The 24-year-old conceded 51 goals and secured eight clean sheets in 38 appearances for Espanyol this season across multiple competitions.
The Spanish talent has proven himself to be a safe pair of hands in La Liga. However, the jury is still out on whether he can maintain his good form in the Premier League if Newcastle manage to land him this off-season.
Garcia is under contract at Espanyol until the summer of 2028 which could make it tough for the Magpies to sign him on the cheap in this transfer period.

Garcia is a solid handler of the ball and can use his quick reflexes to make a few important saves for his team at the back. Standing at 1.91m, he is a towering presence inside his penalty area and is not shy of coming out of his lines to clear the danger when required.
However, the Spanish talent has to figure out a way to improve his ball distribution if he wants to taste success at the highest level. Furthermore, he might struggle to cope with the high intensity of Premier League football.
We can expect Garcia to enhance the quality of Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe’s goalkeeping department. He is good enough to compete for a regular starting place at St. James’ Park in the coming years.
At 24, Garcia has his best years ahead of him which makes him a decent option for the Magpies to consider in this summer transfer window. The Spaniard could even help the Tyneside club challenge across all fronts over the next few years. With all things considered, Newcastle would be wise to snap Garcia up this summer as he has what it takes to be a top keeper soon.
