Newcastle United have given a positive update on the health of manager Eddie Howe.

The 47-year-old missed his side's thumping 4-1 victory over Manchester United at St James' Park on Sunday after being admitted to hospital on Friday with Jason Tindall and Graeme Jones taking over first team duties.

The club has now announced that Howe had been suffering from pneumonia and is now recovering in hospital however he will not be in the dugout for either the visit of Crystal Palace or the trip to Villa Park on Saturday.

"A huge thank you to everyone connected with Newcastle United and the wider football community for your messages and warm wishes," Howe said in a statement. "They have meant a lot to me and my family.

"I also want to pay tribute to our incredible NHS and the hospital staff who have treated me. I'm immensely grateful for the specialist care I'm receiving and, after a period of recovery, I look forward to being back as soon as possible."
