Newcastle United have turned down a January transfer window offer from Fenerbahce for Lloyd Kelly.

However, that may not be the end of the matter.

The Telegraph say that their information is that Newcastle United were happy to listen to what the Turkish club had to offer BUT weren’t impressed by the bid that was made for Lloyd Kelly.

The newspaper saying that they have been told that Eddie Howe and the club don’t want to lose the 26 year old defender, but naturally, if they receive a much improved offer that was ‘too good to turn down’ for a squad player, then the deal could/would be on.

Newcastle United said to be further irritated when on top of the low offer received, they also saw Fenerbahce vice-president Acun Ilicah go public with the transfer negotiations, Ilicah telling the media in Turkey; “We are in talks for a Lloyd Kelly transfer. He is a player we are interested in and if we can reach an agreement we will transfer this player.”

As things stand, Newcastle United look far more stronger in defence than earlier in the season, in terms of strength in depth. Especially on the left side, where Botman and Targett are back available, along with the likes of Burn and Hall who have been first choice.

Jose Mourinho is keen on signing Lloyd Kelly having been impressed in the past by the defender when playing for Bournemouth, plus of course the fact he can play at left-back and in the middle.

Whilst I don’t think for one second this was the driving force in signing him in the summer, the fact remains that when you sign a player as a free agent, it means that if you do then sell them on, it is massively beneficial from a PSR perspective, any transfer fee would be pure profit from an accountancy perspective as well.

When it comes to player trading, fair to say that if Lloyd Kelly was sold this month, then that transfer fee and saved wages, especially from a PSR perspective, would then see that purchasing power go towards helping to strengthen the NUFC squad in other places, rather than the left side of defence where options look far more positive now.

The Telegraph add that Newcastle United are continuing talks with a number of clubs, regarding the likely departure of Miguel Almiron, with Sean Longstaff also an outside bet to leave this month.

I think that finally we will see in this window and/or the summer one,, a fair few squad players leave and a decent amount of money coming in, as well as importantly, helping to give extra PSR flex.

As for Lloyd Kelly, I think that he has done ok. Not great, but obviously difficult coming in for odd starts here and there, plus in the two different positions. He has started in the cup wins against Bromley, AFC Wimbledon and Chelsea (his best performance for me), as well as four Premier League matches. Plus off the bench in five PL games and the Arsenal cup one.

Fenerbahce are second in the Turkish league, eight points off top and six clear of third. Whilst after failing in the qualifying rounds of the Champions League, they are 21st in the Europa League with two matches to play, if remaining in the top 24 they will go into a play-off for the last 16.
