Official: Barcelona defender earns medical green light ahead of Real Sociedad clash | OneFootball

FC Barcelona may have just played an extremely intense game against Atletico Madrid last night but the hustle simply does not stop with Hansi Flick & co. already starting to prepare for the La Liga game against Real Sociedad this weekend.

Barcelona’s mid-season rut in November and December started with a 1-0 loss to Real Sociedad away from home and they will be keen to get the score right this time around when they take on Imanol Alguacil’s men.

The Catalan club have an extremely intense schedule on the horizon as they continue to wage a battle on all fronts. Hansi Flick’s men are under pressure to maintain their lead in La Liga, get past Benfica in the Champions League and get past Atletico Madrid in the Copa del Rey semifinals.

With the intense schedule ahead, Flick will want whatever possible options he has at his disposal and keeping in line with this, the official Barcelona website have confirmed that defender Andreas Christensen has earned the medical green light today ahead of the weekend’s game.

The Dane has not played a game for Barcelona since their campaign opener against Valencia after which he got injured. He did return briefly to the matchday squad early in 2025 but suffered yet another issue that has kept him out since.

In his absence, the likes of Eric Garcia have leapfrogged him in the pecking order and the ex-Chelsea defender will have to fight to win a place in the team. He had been a very reliable performer for Barcelona in two successive seasons but is now suddenly in the oblivion.

However, as mentioned earlier, having the experience of Christensen in the squad would be invaluable for Hansi Flick, should he decide to rotate or see out games by resting a few key players. Capable of playing both in defense and midfield, the Dane adds versatility.

It remains to be seen if Christensen finally receives a few minutes against Real Sociedad although Hansi Flick might choose to tread on the side of caution when it comes to the Dane. Let’s wait and see how his recovery and his re-induction into the team plays out.
