A headline member of the midfield ranks at La Liga giants Real Madrid is set to bid a final farewell to the club this summer.

This comes amid confirmation that Luka Modrić will not be offered a new contract in Spain’s capital.

The subject of veteran midfielder Modrić’s future in the colours of Real has of course long been a prominent one in the headlines across the continent.

As much comes with Los Blancos headed into a new project under the watch of Xabi Alonso, and the Croatian’s contract terms due to expire upon the season’s close.

Reports had varied widely regarding the plans of Florentino Pérez and co, with some having been adamant that Modrić would be offered a new deal, and others assuring that a parting of ways was on the cards.

And as alluded to above, on Thursday, it is the latter route which has been confirmed.

As per a statement released across Real Madrid’s website and social media platforms this afternoon:

‘Real Madrid CF and our captain Luka Modrić have agreed to end an unforgettable period as a player for our club at the end of the Club World Cup, which our team will play in the United States starting June 18.

‘Real Madrid wants to express its gratitude and deep affection for someone who is already one of the greatest legends of our club and of world football.’
