An official Newcastle United injury update has followed Sunday afternoon’s victory at St James’ Park.
United taking all three points as they secured what could be a key 2-0 win.
A sixth home Premier League win in a row.
Sandro Tonali getting the all important early goal inside two minutes.
Then Bruno settling any added time nerves with the second goal, which arrived in the 90th minute.
Some notable absentees from Sunday’s matchday squad though, as well as some other injury concerns.
Two big matches still to go and with NUFC still needing to make the very final step over the Champions League qualifying line, Eddie Howe delivering this official Newcastle United injury update after the win against Chelsea:
Eddie Howe on Sven Botman who was subbed off on 55 minutes, having started his first match in over three months:
“Sven was slightly uncomfortable in the half-time break with a knee problem.
“I don’t think it’s serious.
“He was obviously OK to carry on but he was feeling something.”
Eddie Howe on Kieran Trippier and Joe Willock who were both surprise absentees from the matchday squad against Chelsea:
“Kieran has a calf problem, Joe has a thigh problem .
“The are both similar injuries.
“We don’t think they are serious injuries but we don’t know if we will see them again this season.
“We would love to get them back fit and able to play a part, but at this moment in time, I have not really got any idea whether or not that is possible.”
Eddie Howe on the absent Joelinton:
“You miss a player like Joelinton, he is such an infectious character in so many different ways.
“When he is missing, you are looking for someone to step up.
“It’s the same with Kieran Trippier. He’s got so much experience and is very vocal, you miss his vocal presence when he’s not there and not playing.”
No update from Eddie Howe on the chances of Joelinton playing again this season but this is what the NUFC Head Coach said on Friday:
“I saw Joe yesterday for the first time in a while because he had been away getting treatment.
“He returned to Brazil briefly but he has been back in Barcelona for another injection and I think he is feeling pretty good.
“Whether we see him before the end of the season though, I’m not sure.”
It was originally the case that the message was Joelinton had no chance of playing again this season, when picking up his latest injury issue. However, the fact that the Brazil international has had this injection, very much points now to Eddie Howe and the club looking to try and get Joelinton into a position where if he is needed, he can play some part in one or both of these final two matches.
