AC Milan will be without one of their captains after Theo Hernandez – their captain for the game against Fiorentina – got himself sent off at the end of the game.

Paulo Fonseca follows the school of thought that several players should be captain, rather than following the traditional idea of a captain and vice captain. Whilst this has its benefits, it can also have several negative areas, and Theo displayed that on Sunday.

Against Fiorentina, Hernandez had a performance of nightmares, not only did he give away a penalty, but he took a penalty from Christian Pulisic – much to the annoyance of Fonseca – and missed that. To make matters worse, he got sent off for arguing with the referee.

He did all this whilst wearing the captain’s armband – which should be an honour, a sign of maturity, leadership, and quality. Theo showed the opposite, perhaps a sign that he is not ready for such a role.

It is possible that the Portuguese head coach would consider dropping him in the next fixture against Udinese, but with his red card, he will miss that game and the one against Bologna, as the Serie A website confirms, then he could have a chance at redemption against Napoli.

Fears were present that he could miss that game, but with confirmation that he will only serve a two-game ban, he has a lengthy period to refind his mental state. He will be eligible for the Champions League, though.
