With Liverpool v Newcastle on Wednesday night, along with other midweek PL games.

A huge result against Forest at the weekend, especially as apart from Liverpool, all of the other six teams lost who had gone into last weekend in the top eight.

Now it is away at Anfield tonight against the league leaders.

These were the Tuesday (last) night results, which could also have gone a lot worse for Newcastle United:

Brighton 2 Bournemouth 1

Chelsea 4 Southampton 0

Palace 4 Villa 1

Wolves 1 Fulham 2

This is how the Premier League table now currently looks on this Wednesday (26 February 2025) morning:

These are the remaining midweek fixture left to play:

Wednesday 26 February

Brentford v Everton (7.30pm)

Man U v Ipswich (7.30pm)

Forest v Arsenal (7.30pm)

Spurs v Man City (7.30pm)

Liverpool v Newcastle (8.15pm)

Thursday 27 February

West Ham v Leicester (8pm)

As no doubt you will know, the top four in the 2024/25 PL table will automatically qualify for next season’s Champions League.

However, there is then the possibility of fifth place also getting a Champions League spot, the two leagues whose teams collectively do best this season in European competitions, getting an extra CL place next season. A possibility that has become a massive probability the longer the season has gone on. The Premier League well ahead at the top due to results so far in Europe this season, La Liga a clear second, whilst Serie A currently in third. However, Italy have now seen four of their eight teams knocked out of Europe, including three of the four who were in the Champions League.

So with it all but a formality that the Premier League will get a fifth Champions League place. This is how Opta currently (before Wednesday’s matches) see the chances of the various teams ending up in that top four and five at the end of the season

As you can see, Newcastle United currently rated as a 33.9% chance of finishing top four and a 54.5% opportunity of ending up top five.

That win over Forest massively boosting Newcastle United, as well as the fact their rivals have lost so many game last weekend and last night.

Obviously the toughest of all fixtures tonight at Anfield against top of the table. However, after this Liverpool match, Newcastle then have eight of their final eleven Premier League games against teams currently tenth or lower in the table.
