It is unrealistic to expect that every player will get equal playing time and opportunities at FC Barcelona. Given the kind of expectations that the club has and the quality of its best players, it is hard to make everyone happy. However, there are exceptions at Barcelona as well.
For much of the opening half of the season, Spanish goalkeeper Inaki Pena was the man being trusted to take over from the injured Marc-Andre Ter Stegen. However, as time went on, it seemed as if Hansi Flick’s trust in the Spaniard began to waver as well.
Soon after, especially since the beginning of 2025, Flick has been much more dependent on Polish goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny. By even labelling him as his number one choice in between the sticks, the Barcelona coach made it clear enough who his first-choice goalkeeper was.
While Szczesny continues to validate that decision with performances such as the one he gave against SL Benfica recently, Pena has also been unlucky to say the least. At least in terms of his sporting qualities, the Spanish goalkeeper did not give too many reasons to Flick to bench him.
However, a certain club reportedly now sees this as an opportunity. According to Fichajes, French side Paris Saint-Germain is now looking to keep tabs on the player as a potential future alternative to their current Italian goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.
If their current goalkeeper ends up leaving in the summer by any chance, Pena is a player PSG looks at positively. They consider him to be experienced enough at the top level to be a useful asset, but they also believe that the player has the potential to develop even further.
Moreover, PSG reportedly likes the Barcelona player’s comfort on the ball and the strong shot-stopping abilities he has showcased this season as well. All of these qualities make him a good fit for Luis Enrique’s PSG side.
However, it will ultimately depend on Barcelona if they wish to sell the player or not. At the same time, however, Pena could end up looking for a way out if his situation does not change and he continues to stay as an out-of-favor goalkeeper behind Wojciech Szczesny.
