Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has been quizzed on whether he would ever consider buying a football club when his coaching career is over.

That subject of discussion has come amid the club’s upcoming clash against Salford City in the third round of the FA Cup, with the League Two side being part-owned by prominent members of Manchester United’s iconic ‘Class of 92’.

The Manchester City manager spoke at length during his pre-match press conference ahead of Saturday evening’s tie, pointing out his affiliation with Salford as a city having lived there during his eight years spent at the Etihad Stadium.

“I’ve lived in Salford for the last eight years! So we will play against my neighbourhood, my town I would say, where I’m living,” Guardiola told reporters during his press conference.

“A lot of respect for the manager (Karl Robinson); we played when he was in Oxford, and when he was assistant to Sam Allardyce at Leeds, and in the last six games, six victories, so huge respect for them and what they do.

“Their intensity, we’ll take them seriously of course, like always we have done in this club since I arrived, and hopefully we can do a good game and make a third victory in a row. A long time this didn’t happen.”

Discussing Salford City’s links to Manchester United’s iconic ‘Class of 1992’ squad, Pep Guardiola reacted, “Well, this generation of players won a lot of titles, they won a lot of money and they can buy teams! So that’s good! Yeah, it’s good…

“They are smart people, I’m pretty sure of that and when the people from football run football clubs, always they take smart decisions and of course, if they decide [to do it], it’s fine.”

But such a pathway for Pep Guardiola after his top-level coaching career comes to an end is not a possibility, as the Manchester City manager insisted, “No… Because I’m not good in that. I’m sometimes a good manager, but as a businessman I’m not good.”

Manchester City’s meeting with Salford City marks the start of an increasingly relentless and challenging period in their fixture list across competitions, with away visits to Brentford and Ipswich Town awaiting in the Premier League alongside a home clash with Chelsea.

The UEFA Champions League further intensifies the pressure on the Premier League champions too, with must-win meetings against Paris Saint-Germain in the French capital and against Club Brugge at the Etihad Stadium on matchday eight.
