Manchester City’s Phil Foden has become the latest player to issue criticism towards former England manager Gareth Southgate and his tactics at Euro 2024 in Germany.

Foden came into a huge summer of international football duties off the back of a staggering individual campaign with Manchester City, playing an integral role in their successful pursuit of a fourth consecutive Premier League title.

Offering goals and assists in abundance and arguably becoming Pep Guardiola’s first name on the teamsheet in many matches, Foden’s reward for an exemplary campaign came both in the form of collective and individual honours.

The Manchester City Academy graduate was handed the Premier League’s Player of the Season award, as well as the senior PFA Men’s Player of the Season trophy after 27 goals and 12 assists across all competitions.

However, his role with England during the European Championships in Germany was more restricted, and many of his opportunities to impress saw Foden given the role of a left-winger by head coach Gareth Southgate.

Speaking during an exclusive interview with the Manchester Evening News’ Simon Bajkowski, Phil Foden revealed his ‘frustration’ at the way his Euros campaign panned out with England last summer.

“I feel frustrated I didn’t get out what I wanted to get out of it,” Foden said. “The position I was put in on the left was very difficult to influence the game.”

The Manchester City midfielder continued, “Coming off last season being the best player in the Premier League and playing centre-midfield, I do feel the position was quite difficult to get used to.

“I’m one who can play multiple positions and had to try to deal with it the best I could. I don’t feel like England ever get going or performed to our potential.”

Phil Foden has endured a difficult first-half to his ongoing season, having previously credited personal issues as the reason behind his slower start as well as fitness and injury problems during the opening weeks of the campaign.

However, the 24-year-old has seen a significant up-turn in his showings across competitions for Manchester City in recent weeks as he begins to look more like the player that contributed so much to Pep Guardiola’s system last season.
