Leah Williamson and Grace Clinton were on target for the Lionesses in Coventry. While England won the game, their defensive frailties were again exposed with another error in the back-line contributing to South Africa’s goal.
When speaking in the post-match press conference, England boss Wiegman said that her side impressed with some aspects of their play but admitted that there’s plenty of work to do to progress.
“I’m happy with the information that we got [from the game],” Wiegman said. “What you saw today was different players in the starting XI and we put players in other positions, this is the moment to do that.
“With some things, I was really happy and in other moments, of course, we can improve.”
Wiegman fielded two very different line-ups against South Africa last night and against Germany on Friday. The England boss said that there are still many questions to answer when it comes to team selection.
She said “I think we still have more questions but that was what we said to each other before this camp. We don’t need to have all of the answers now. We have two more games and we’re just trying to get as much information as possible. Some players have to be a little more patient than others but we need these games to try out different things.”
England have conceded some poor goals in the current international window, many of which could have been avoided. Wiegman highlighted the fact that her side must cut out the basic defensive mistakes.
She said “We had more moments in this game. We all know, the players know, they don’t want to make those mistakes. We had some moments of that and they punished us.
“Of course, we want to take those moments out. Football is a game of mistakes, you just want to have as few of them as possible. You want to have those mistakes as far away from goal as possible.”
England resume their preparations for UEFA Women’s EURO 2025 in the November international window when they play home friendlies against the United States and Switzerland.
