Miron Muslic’s now confirmed appointment as the new head coach of 2. Bundesliga outfit FC Schalke 04 has drawn the wrath of his now former English club. Plymouth Argyle – who were relegated to League One under Muslic’s stewardship this year – never hid the fact that they were disappointed in his decision to negotiate with Schalke. Now, Plymouth boss Simon Hallet has lashed out at Muslic in a scathing rebuke.

Muslic was only just appointed at Plymouth in January 2025. According to Hallet’s statement, the 42-year-old head coach deliberately mislead the club with respect to rumors linking him with other positions once the season was over. Moreover, Hallet railed at the fact that Muslic showed no appreciation for the fact that the club acceded to all his previous requests.

We hired Miron in January and gave him a three-and-a-half-year contract,” Hallet’s published statement reads. “Shortly after he started, we also hired the staff he requested, including an assistant coach, performance analysts, a coach for set pieces.

After the end of the season amid rumors that Miron had attracted interest from other clubs, I called him personally and he assured me that he was 100 percent committed to Argyle,” Hallet’s statement continues. “As a result, Miron continued to attend all squad planning meetings and was involved in the interviews and signing of players until last week.

His colleagues had no indication that he wanted to leave the club,” Hallet went on to say. “His contract required prior approval to speak to other clubs. We were not prepared to give that approval, but had to reluctantly when Miron told us he would not be returning to Plymouth under any circumstances.

Hallet also noted that the club considered taking legal action as a result of Muslic’s breach of contract. Hallet specifically stated that the amount of compensation Plymouth received for Muslic – according to the WAZ €700,000 plus a few add ons – didn’t conform to the terms of Muslic’s existing contract.

Hallet cited the need to move on quickly as the reason Plymouth didn’t end up taking legal action.

Rather than getting bogged down in a lengthy and extremely disruptive process, we agreed on a compensation package that – while below the contractually agreed amount, represents a good financial outcome for a League One side,” Hallet’s statement concluded.
