Selling to strengthen: Which three Wednesday players could move on for a big fee at the end of the season?
As Sheffield Wednesday prepare for the summer transfer window, the club faces key decisions regarding player sales.
Financial Fair Play (FFP) considerations and squad restructuring could make this an important period for the Owls. While some players will be integral to next season’s plans, others could be moved on for significant fees.
Three standout names - Djeidi Gassama, Di’Shon Bernard, and Bailey Cadamarteri - could generate interest from higher-tier clubs. Below, we assess their market value and potential transfer scenarios.
A product of Paris Saint-Germain’s esteemed academy, 21-year-old winger Djeidi Gassama has established himself as one of Sheffield Wednesday’s brightest attacking outlets.
His ability to beat defenders, win duels, and draw fouls makes him a valuable asset in the transfer market.
Since joining the club, Gassama has registered nine goals in 69 appearances, demonstrating his attacking threat. His dribbling ability and pace have drawn comparisons to other Championship wingers who have recently secured big-money moves to the Premier League.
One useful comparison is Romaine Esse, who broke through at Millwall around the same time as Gassama. Esse was sold for £12 million, though Gassama is two years younger, which could add to his long-term value.
While he may not command an identical fee, the Owls could likely demand around £8 million for his services, particularly given the growing interest in dynamic, ball-carrying wingers.
Centre-back Di’Shon Bernard has built an impressive resume across the English Football League.
A product of Manchester United’s academy, the 24-year-old has gained experience through spells at Portsmouth, Salford City, Grimsby Town, and Hull City before establishing himself at Hillsborough.
With 67 appearances and three goals for Sheffield Wednesday, Bernard has showcased his defensive reliability and composure on the ball. However, his disciplinary record - seven yellow cards and two red cards so far this season - could be a concern for potential suitors.
Despite this, his athleticism and versatility mean he remains an attractive option in the transfer market.
Bernard’s current market value is estimated at £1.7 million, but with defenders often in demand, particularly those with EFL experience, a bidding war could push his price higher.
If a Championship club or lower-end Premier League side sees him as a valuable squad addition, Wednesday could look to negotiate a fee in the region of £2 million or more.
Bailey Cadamarteri, a product of Sheffield Wednesday’s own youth system, represents a rare financial advantage: pure profit under Financial Fair Play rules.
Homegrown players carry additional value in the market, particularly when they help clubs meet Premier League and EFL homegrown player quotas.
Cadamarteri’s ability to lead the line and his potential make him an attractive prospect. One recent comparison is Tommy Conway, who moved from Bristol City to Middlesbrough for a reported £4.5 million.
Given that Cadamarteri is two years younger, the Owls' hierarchy could aim for a similar or slightly higher fee.
However, Cadamarteri has played fewer Championship minutes than Conway at this stage, which may result in a lower valuation. That said, his loan spell at Lincoln City in League One this season has been promising, where he has registered 22 league appearances, 13 starts, and five goals. His performances at Lincoln could help boost his stock, particularly for clubs looking for a young striker with potential.
Moreover, the so-called “English tax” - where domestic players are valued at a premium due to their nationality - could further inflate his price.
With the right suitor, Cadamarteri could generate between £2 million and £4 million, making him one of Wednesday’s most lucrative assets.
Gassama, Bernard, and Cadamarteri represent three players who could fetch significant transfer fees while allowing the club to reinvest in other areas.
These players are considered some of Wednesday's best assets, but the club has good depth on the wing in particular, meaning a sale could help rebalance the squad.
While some departures may be difficult to accept from a footballing standpoint, maximizing these players’ value could put Wednesday in a stronger position for next season.
