The international break always leads to some funny stories in the papers as players go back to their home countries, but this is an odd one.

Diario AS in Spain did a whole feature yesterday focusing on Renato Veiga, the defender who has quickly established himself as a really useful squad player for Chelsea after signing in the summer, and has also made his full Portugal debut since.

We’re not quite sure why AS decided to go so big on a Portuguese player playing for Chelsea – with no obvious connection to Spain at all. Perhaps they just ended up watching the Portugal win over Poland and were struck by him. But regardless of the reason, it was a gushing review of the former Basel man.

HIs efforts stopping Robert Lewandowski really got the attention of Pablo Fuentenebro, who wrote that the defender “has gone from being almost unknown” to “one of the breakout stars of the season in Europe” and “the new idol of Portugal and Chelsea.”

That’s perhaps going a little far, but given the €14m paid for him and his very low profile before that, there’s no doubt he’s been a huge and pleasing surprise. He’s got great physical gifts and we’ve been hugely impressed by his character and the way he speaks in press conferences.

Next steps for rising star

The question is what’s next for Veiga. At the moment he’s got the chance for plenty of minutes – as second choice left back, third choice defensive midfielder, and a 5th or 6th choice option at centre back. But long term he may want a more defined role – unless he’s happy being a Cesar Azpilicueta style eternal utility player.

This weekend will be a great test for his new “idol” status – with Marc Cucurella suspended, Veiga will celebrate his big week with a start against Liverpool at Anfield.
