According to a report from L’Équipe, Paris Saint-Germain considered appointing Mikel Arteta to succeed Christophe Galtier as head coach in 2023 before appointing Luis Enrique. The Arsenal manager was included on a shortlist as they considered candidates to replace the former Lille manager.

Arteta has close ties to Les Parisiens. At 18, the former Everton midfielder struggled for opportunities in the first team at Barcelona and made the decision to leave and join PSG on loan in search of first-team opportunities for his early development. The Spaniard made 53 appearances for Les Parisiens.

Despite the Arsenal boss making a final shortlist and being admired by some at QSI due to his status as a former player, discussions for him to take over in the dugout at the Parc des Princes never developed beyond initial conversations. Internal sources at PSG deny ever considering Arteta, stating they always wanted Luis Enrique.
