Claudio Ranieri admits he didn’t expect to be the Roma coach for another Derby della Capitale but insists Lazio are his favourites. Therefore, he needs a ‘big performance’ from his players.
The Giallorossi face their city rivals in the first derby of the season tomorrow.
This past November, Ranieri returned to the club for the third time in his career and didn’t expect to take charge of another derby della Capitale as the Giallorossi boss.
“Honestly, no. The last time I came here as the Cagliari coach, I thought, ‘This is the last time.’ I didn’t think I’d return here as the Roma coach,” he told DAZN via Alfredo Pedullà.

Lazio are fighting for a Champions League spot and have earned 15 points more than Roma.
“The derby defies logic; they are the favourite because they have 15 points more than us, which means they’ve had a better start and deserve what they are getting,” argued Ranieri.
“They play well, score goals and create many opportunities. It’s a team that moves in sync, so I expect a great derby. We’ll need a big performance from all those involved.
“I’ve worked on everything. Every coach wants to win, but there have been difficulties. Now, I’m convinced the boat is navigating; we are still not going full speed, but I wait for that moment.”
Lazio coach Marco Baroni is in his first season at the club and is collecting excellent results in Serie A and Europa League.
“I can only congratulate him; he started from the bottom, has done well, and is now reaping the rewards,” said Ranieri.
The Giallorossi coach confirmed that Lorenzo Pellegrini is having a tough time as he takes “all responsibilities on his shoulders.”
The Roma captain hasn’t played at home since the end of October due to a toxic environment at the Olimpico. Most fans have unfairly accused him of contributing to Daniele De Rossi’s sacking in September.
