Real Madrid, in recent weeks, have been working around the clock to complete the deal to sign Alvaro Carreras.

The Benfica star has emeged as the club’s top target in the left-back unit, as they look to find an upgrade over Ferland Mendy and Fran Garcia.

Not too long ago, it was even reported that Real Madrid have an agreement in place with Carreras over a summer transfer.

Progress has stalled

However, a recent report from COPE suggests Real Madrid’s deal to sign Carreras has stalled.

This comes just days before the June 10 deadline for the first part of the transfer window – the one that applies for the FIFA Club World Cup squad registration.

The major roadblock is Benfica’s reluctance to let the player leave immediately. The Portuguese giants will also be participating in the Club World Cup and are demanding more time, as they work on finding a replacement.

Another complication is the financial angle. Manchester United, Carreras’ former club, have a €18 million buy-back clause, even though his full release clause is €50 million.

That means Benfica would have to give a portion of the Real Madrid fee to United, further slowing negotiations.

Carreras, for his part, has made his intentions very clear. The Spanish full-back only wants to join Real Madrid and has no interest in returning to Manchester United.

That personal commitment is helping Madrid push forward and the Spanish giants are hopeful of reaching an agreement soon, ideally before the start of the FIFA Club World Cup.

It will be interesting to see if Los Blancos can work out a deal with Benfica where they can lower the fee by offering a player in return.
