It’s no secret that Real Madrid are keen to address their defence in the coming transfer windows, with all three positions being looked at. The most pressing needs are at full-back, with Trent Alexander-Arnold wanted to be the man to solve the club’s right-back problems, while Ferland Mendy and Fran Garcia have flattered to deceive at left-back, although Alphonso Davies will not be arriving at either’s replacement after he signed a new contract with Bayern Munich.

At this stage, centre-back is less of a priority for Real Madrid – this is mainly because of Raul Asencio, who has cemented himself in the first team this season after benefitting from injuries to Eder Militao and David Alaba. The 21-year-old, who will start against Manchester City in the Champions League on Wednesday, has impressed in recent months, and as such, he has filled the void in the centre of defence.

Despite this, Real Madrid are still looking to bring in at least one central defender in the next couple of years, given that Alaba and Antonio Rudiger are both coming towards the end of their careers. According to reports in England (via Diario AS), three of their targets are in the Premier League: Jarrad Branthwaite of Everton, Liverpool’s Ibrahima Konate, and AFC Bournemouth sensation Dean Huijsen.

Jarrad Branthwaite is one of the names on Real Madrid’s list

Real Madrid’s interest in Huijsen has already been reported, and the Spanish youngster would be available in the summer for €60m. Branthwaite has also been linked in the past, while Konate appears to have emerged in recent months after some good form with Premier League leaders Liverpool, who now have two defenders (Alexander-Arnold being the first) in the sights of Los Blancos.

It remains to be seen whether any of these players are sought in the summer. Huijsen is probably the most likely, although Real Madrid bosses are currently happy with the options that Carlo Ancelotti has in the centre of defence.
