Chelsea have been told they will need to pay €80m for Tomas Araujo if they wish to sign the defender from Benfica according to reports.

The Blues are bracing themselves for another busy summer and could fund their transfer business by selling as many as seven or eight players.

Chelsea face arguably their most important window under the new ownership with the club looking to sign a striker, centre back and right footed attacker to strengthen Enzo Maresca’s squad.

Araujo to cost €80m

Whilst a striker is a priority the Blues also need reinforcements at the back, and there’s set to be a lot of movement in the centre back department this summer.

Axel Disasi is expected to leave, whilst Trevoh Chalobah and Renato Veiga could follow him out of the Stamford Bridge exit door.

Chelsea have been heavily linked with Bournemouth’s Dean Huijsen, who has a £50m release clause, whilst they are said to still be keen on Marc Guehi.

Another player the Blues have shown past interest in is Benfica’s Araujo and Caught Offside have reported the 22-year-old is still on the club’s radar, and along with Real Madrid they both recently made “informal contact” with Benfica.

The report adds the Portuguese giants won’t sell unless his €80m release clause is paid in in full, and it remains to be seen if Chelsea are prepared to pay that much.

Araujo has one cap for Portugal, and has scored once in 40 appearances in all competitions for Benfica this season as they look to win the league title.

The Portugal international fits the bill in terms of age profile for the Blues, and he is certainly more experienced than someone like Huijsen.

However, there’s likely to be question marks over whether he’s the right player to come in and lead the Chelsea back line, with the Blues desperately needing to fill the void left by Thiago Silva.
