Ronald Araujo signed a new contract with FC Barcelona last week, committing his future to the club until the summer of 2031.

The renewal came as a surprise turnaround as the Uruguayan international appeared to be leaning towards a departure only days ago before signing the new deal.

Araujo’s new contract is understood to have a release clause lower than the €1 billion amount from his previous deal.

With the club not revealing the actual value of the termination clause, there have been several claims circulating in the media about the same.

Key details

Now, Miguel Rico has come forward with more details about Araujo’s release clause as part of his new contract at Barcelona.

As reported initially, the release clause for the 25-year-old club captain is set at €65 million for the summer of 2025, increasing to €85 million from the winter transfer window next year.

The key detail that was not shared earlier is that the clause includes an important caveat. While the figures quoted are accurate, they exclude the major European clubs that are direct competitors of Barcelona.

Indeed, the release clause amount is much higher for the so-called ‘super clubs’ of Europe – the likes of Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, PSG, and Manchester City to name a few – teams who could be direct rivals for Barça in the UEFA Champions League.

For such clubs, Araujo’s release clause is reportedly set at a figure between €300 million and €400 million, making sure that signing him from Barcelona will not be straightforward for those teams.

Summer move possible

With the situation as it stands, there is little doubt that come summer, some clubs will approach Barcelona with enough money to try and secure the services of Araujo.

Ultimately, the decision will rest with the player, who will have to choose between the glory of playing for Barcelona and the financial rewards of joining a second-tier team.

These coming months will be crucial for Araujo’s future. Much will depend on the game-time he receives, now that Inigo Martinez is set to return, and how he performs in the matches he gets a chance.
