Revealed: Arsenal and West Ham have the Premier League’s most ‘clutch’ goalscorers

Since the start of last season, Arsenal have scored 20 goals in the 80th minute or later in the Premier League. Only Manchester City (22) have scored more late goals than the Gunners.

Of those 20 late goals, six have won matches. This is the second best-record in the Premier League since 2023-24. Only Manchester United (eight) have scored more late winners.

But who are the clutch players in the Premier League? The men scoring those late winners?

We’ve looked at the late winners scored in the Premier League since the start of last season, among players still in the competition. That means there’s no Scott McTominay in the list, despite his two late winners for Manchester United last season.

We also filtered out match-winners scored from minute one to 79. On that front, Jhon Duran leads the way in the Premier League this season, with three, alongside Erling Haaland and Luis Diaz. Brennan Johnson and Diogo Jota are the only other players with more than two winning goals in the Premier League this season. Of course, Duran is the super sub with four goals off the bench in the Premier League this season — already halfway to Adam Le Fondre’s single-campaign record set in 2012-13.

Who are the Premier League’s most ‘clutch’ goalscorers?

Kai Havertz (Arsenal)

  1. Late winners: 3
  2. Minutes played: 3,269

You won’t be surprised to see an Arsenal player top of the list. Since the start of last season, Kai Havertz has scored five Premier League goals in the 80th minute or later. During that time only Erling Haaland (seven) has scored more late goals in the Premier League. But Havertz comes out on top for late winners.

The German has scored three late winners for Arsenal in the league since his arrival from Chelsea last summer. All three of the late winners came last season, including one on the final day of the campaign against Everton to end 2023-24 on a high.

Brentford were sick of the sight of Havertz last year, with both of his other late winners coming against the Bees. At the Gtech Community Stadium in November, Havertz scored the only goal in the 89th minute, keeping Arsenal top of the league. Then, in March, Havertz scored in the 86th minute to put Arsenal 2-1 up against Brentford at the Emirates. This extended their winning run to sight games in the league, putting a lot of pressure on Man City.

Tomas Soucek (West Ham)

  1. Late winners: 3
  2. Minutes played: 3,332

West Ham United’s Tomas Soucek is the only other Premier League player with three late winners since the start of last season. He only misses out on top spot by virtue of having played 54 more minutes than Havertz.

Two of Soucek’s late winners came in back-to-back matches in November last season. First he won the game in the 88th minute against Nottingham Forest, before scoring a 90th-minute winner against Burnley the following week.

Everton were once again on the receiving end of a sucker punch, with Soucek scoring to make it 2-1 at Goodison Park in March. West Ham went on to win the game 3-1 with another late strike, but Soucek’s goal was the match winner.

Sasa Kalajdzic (Wolves)

  1. Late winners: 2
  2. Minutes played: 237

We’d like to start this section by pointing out that Sasa Kalajdzic has played just 237 minutes since the start of last season. He spent the second half of the campaign on loan at Eintracht Frankfurt, where he suffered an ACL injury.

But in the first half of the season Kalajdzic scored two goals for Wolves, both late winners. The first came against, you guessed it, Everton. This was an 87th-minute winner just two minutes after Kalajdzic had come on as a substitute.

Kalajdzic repeated the feat against Bournemouth, netting an 88th-minute winner. This time, however, he had to wait six minutes after coming off the bench. Either way, Jhon Duran eat your heart out.

Darwin Nunez (Liverpool)

  1. Late winners: 2
  2. Minutes played: 2,180

Darwin Nunez gets a lot of stick from opposition fans, but he’s delivered some clutch moments for Liverpool. The Uruguayan has scored four goals in the 80th minute or later in the Premier League since the start of last season. Two of those have been winners.

We don’t need to tell you the first. That came in Liverpool’s 2-1 win over Newcastle in August. Nunez came off the bench in the 77th minute, scored an equaliser four minutes later and then won the match in injury time. He single-handedly turned no points into three for Liverpool at St James’ Park.

Then, in March, Nunez broke Nottingham Forest hearts at the City Ground. The Tricky Trees looked set to be holding onto a point until Nunez scored the only goal in the ninth minute of second-half injury time to hand Liverpool all three points.

Joao Pedro (Brighton)

  1. Late winners: 2
  2. Minutes played: 2,324

Joao Pedro is one of six players to score a late winner in the Premier League this season. It came against Manchester United at the Amex in the fifth minute of second-half injury time to earn Brighton all three points. Unlike a few on this list, Joao Pedro had started the game.

The Brazilian also played the full 90 minutes when scoring a late winner against Aston Villa in May. Again it came at home, but this time Joao Pedro did have a bit of fortune. With the game still goalless, Brighton were awarded a penalty in the 87th minute. The usually reliable Joao Pedro stepped up and missed his spot-kick but was able to score the rebound.

Honourable mentions

The other players who have scored two match-winners or more after 80 minutes are Rodri (2), Bruno Fernandes (2), Declan Rice (2). They missed out on the top five above purely because of having played more minutes.

Most Premier League equalisers scored after 80+ minutes

A point can be precious, so here are the top 10 Premier League players for equalisers scored after 80 minutes. Cole Palmer tops the list after earning Chelsea points late on against Manchester City and Manchester United (the latter through was also followed by a match-winner). Dominic Solanke tied games for Bournemouth late on twice since the start of last season — however, on one of those occasions (against Brentford) the Cherries went on to concede again and lose the match.
