Incoming Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has issued a stern warning over the 4-1 win against Manchester City with Sporting CP on Tuesday night.

The Premier League champions were issued their third successive defeat across all competitions, making it the first time in over six years since they last lost three matches on the bounce under Pep Guardiola.

The 4-1 scoreline followed a largely positive opening 45 minutes from the visiting Blues, dominating proceedings and creating plenty in the way of chances but failing to add to Phil Foden’s opener inside five minutes only for Viktor Gyokeres to equaliser before the break.

The second-half would bring a very different story as Maximiliano Araujo would move Sporting into the lead after just 26 seconds into the half, with a further two strikes from Gyokeres to make it a hat-trick for the Swedish forward.

Speaking to reporters after the contest in Lisbon on Tuesday night, Sporting manager Ruben Amorim has been keen to warn those watching that Manchester United simply cannot play the way the current Portuguese champions play.

“This does not mean anything in particular, do not take anything from this,” Amorim warned those watching his Sporting side on Tuesday night of a Manchester United persuasion.

“We cannot transport one reality to another. Manchester United cannot play the way we play, we will have to adapt,” the 39-year-old continued.

On the result itself and how the match panned out across the 90 minutes, Ruben Amorim continued with honesty as he said, “It is misleading, we were very lucky today.

“But the feeling with my players, the way they celebrate with the fans was very special. When I arrive to the Premier League it is a different world, different pressure.”

And the praise for his managerial counterpart continued into television interviews, with Amorim keen to point out that after Manchester City’s 0-5 win over Sporting CP in 2022, Guardiola remains ahead of him and is “so much better than me at the moment”.

Manchester City’s demanding fixture schedule does not get any easier any time soon as they face the challenge of an in-form Brighton & Hove Albion side on Saturday evening before the international break.

The entire Etihad squad will be hoping for a much more positive result heading into the final pause for national team duties of the calendar year, but are aware that the break may be coming at the perfect time for the club.

The international break will also present Manchester City with the opportunity to focus attentions on getting certain players back up to full fitness, and allow others to recover from niggling injury problems suffered over the last few weeks.
