Sporting CP president Frederico Varandas has made fresh demands to Manchester United to part ways with their head coach, according to A Bola.
The Red Devils recently ended their association with manager Erik ten Hag following a run of four wins from 13 appearances in all competitions.
The club have already identified a ready-made replacement for the Dutchman, but a deal appears far from straightforward at the current point.
United have agreed to pay the €10 million release clause in Ruben Amorim’s contract at Sporting CP, but Varandas has made additional demands.
The 45-year-old is eyeing a further €5m to terminate the contracts of the backroom staff. Amorim would like to bring them alongside him to United.
He is also asking a significant fee to release Amorim immediately without serving the 30-day notice period present in the Portuguese’s contract.
United are keen on having Amorim in the dug-out for the Premier League game against Chelsea on Sunday. In that case, they may have to compensate Sporting CP soon.
United have had a dreadful league campaign with just 11 points accumulated from nine games.
The club are already seven points adrift of the Champions League places and need a huge response when Chelsea visit Old Trafford in Sunday’s late kick-off.
Ten Hag’s exit could bring a reaction from the players. Ruud van Nistelrooy has been handed interim charge, but United may prefer Amorim in the dug-out.
The Portuguese is unlikely to make a huge difference in training before the game, but his presence with the team at Old Trafford would provide an extra boost.
United are racing against time at the moment. With a work permit needing to be finalised, the board need to compensate Sporting CP as soon as possible.
